What is SMSTS?
Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is a 5 day course aimed at site managers, agents and people are currently, or will soon be, responsible for project planning, management/organising, controlling, recording safety/monitoring and administering groups of workers as well as proprietors of small to medium sized construction companies.
SMSTS course is recognised by industry, and the Approved Code of Practice to the Construction. It covers all the relevant legislation and other issues that affect safe working in the construction, building and civil engineering industries.
The course prioritises the importance of safety and risk assessments in the construction sites or workplace and emphasises the requirement for suitable control measures and effective communication to help maintain safety standards among the workforce.
Do I need qualification for SMSTS?
No, this is a public course and you do not need any prior qualifications or certificates. You must be able to read, write and understand English to a good level. You will need to provide a valid ID on the first day of the course, such as a copy of your passport or driving licence.
The certificate is valid for 5 years. You will need to take the SMSTS refresher course before your certificate expires. You need to renew this certficate every five years before it expires by attending the SMSTS Refresher course. Otherwise, you’ll need to take the full SMSTS course again. So make sure when you pass that you keep up to date and keep your career progressing!
Here are 12 focus areas of SMSTS:
- Risk assessments/method statements
- Occupational health management
- Behavioral safety
- CDM (Construction Design and Management) Regulations
- Recent changes in accepted working practices
- Confined spaces
- Working at height
To help attendees sufficiently prepare for the final exam which is a multiple-choice assessment, they are usually provided with interactive revision materials, like a kind of homework, as part of the course fees.
These courses range in price but are usually around £500-£600. These courses are available throughout the UK.
How do i know it’s right for me?
Now that you know the basics of the course, you need to figure out if this is right for you. SMSTS courses are perfect for those who are looking to take the step up into construction or project management, especially if they have experience in those fields. This is a great course for people who are already in those positions who are looking to take control of larger projects or ask for a wage raise.
This course is fairly expensive, but the potential return is great! So you want to be sure you can focus on the course for the 5 days and pass. Otherwise you would be looking at paying another £500-£600 to take the course again. The final exam is a multiple choice assessment, which if you have studied for you should find relatively easy. According to ConstructionSkills, which writes the syllabus and audits the training providers, 50,000 people sat the SMSTS test last year and the vast majority of people passed!
